About George Washington University

George Washington University, commonly known as simply GW, GWU or George Washington, is a private, coeducational comprehensive research university, with the main campus located in Foggy Bottom, which is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Washington, DC, and which got its name because of its riverside location and because of its high concentration of fog and industrial smoke.

GWU traces its roots back when the 1st American President, George Washington, was serving, getting its name in 1904, when it was changed from Columbian University to George Washington University, due to an agreement between the university’s leadership and the George Washington Memorial Association, being relocated to its present location, in Foggy Bottom, in 1912.

Today, GW is known as the largest university in the nation capital of Washington, DC, being renowned for its programs in political sciences, international affairs and journalism. The university has been highly ranked by The Princeton Review, which placed it in Top 10 for the following categories: Dorms like Palaces, Great College Towns, Most Politically Active and Best in the Northeast.

GWU is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, most of its athletic teams, which are known as the George Washington Colonials, playing in the NCAA Division I level. All the indoor sports games are played at the Smith Center, on the Foggy Bottom campus, and all the outdoor sports games are held at the Athletic Complex, located on the Mount Vernon campus.

The Colonials are best known for their achievements in men’s basketball, in which they’ve experienced victory many times in the past years, including in 2004, when they won the Atlantic 10 West Title and the Atlantic 10 Tournament Title, automatically winning a spot in the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
